Orihuela: The town of Orihuela is the capital of the largest district in the Alicante province - the Vega Baja (low fertile valley). Famous mostly for its huge number of fine churches it has a history going back to Roman times.
Although it lies some 20 km inland, Orihuela has its own stretch of coastline (Orihuela Costa) with around 16 km of fine sandy beaches.
Home to the famous Spanish poet Miguel Hernandez, you can visit the Miguel Hernandez Museum, located in the house where he once lived. Also worth a visit are the Cathedral, the Palace of Rubalcava and the Wall Museum, together with any number of churches.
Historically Orihuela is noted for its being the place from where Ferdinand and Isabella made their final push on Granada to expel the last vestiges of the Arab occupation.
Orihuela is situated on the N340 between Murcia and Elche.
