Mar Menor - Murcia - Spain
The Mar Menor (Lesser Sea) is the biggest saltwater lagoon in Europe, having an area of around 170 sq km and a coastline of approximately 70 km. Despite its size the Mar Menor is very shallow, being only about 7 metres at its deepest point.
The Mar Menor is renowned for its fine sandy beaches and for its having a temperature several degrees warmer than the surrounding Mediterranean sea. It is a popular location for water sports and is one of the best wind surfing venues in Europe.
The Mar Menor has a very high salt content and is an ideal place to learn to swim as it is possible to float with ease.
There are lots of places to visit around the Mar Menor including La Manga, Santiago de la Ribera, Los Alcazares and notably the mud baths of Lo Pagan, where many come to enjoy the healing effects of the mud and the salty water.
The Mar Menor can be easily accessed via the N332 or the AP-7 motorway.
