Costa Blanca Resorts - Guardamar del Segura
Guardamar del Segura: Sitting on the Costa Blanca coastline just north of Torrevieja is the ancient town of Guardamar del Segura. Situated at the mouth of the River Segura its history has revolved around both the river and the sea.
Guardamar del Segura was the site of a Phoenician harbour during the 8th - 6th Centuries BC and was an important trading post in these ancient times. Occupied in later years by the Romans and later the Moors, Guardamar has a rich and interesting history.
Devastated by the earthquake of 1829 the town was rebuilt in a different location closer to the sea. This proved to be a mistake as the ever moving sand dunes of this part of the coast started to engulf the new town and over a period of 30 years a tree planting project was undertaken to anchor the sand and save the town.
These tree lined areas are now pleasant parks (Parque de Alfonso XIII and Parque Reina Sofia), and are well worth a visit.
Guardamar del Segura is situated on the main coast road the N332 between Torrevieja and Santa Pola.
