Cartagena

Costa Calida Information
Cartagena -

The ancient city of Cartagena has a rich and exciting history stretching back over 2,000 years. Founded by the Carthaginians (hence the name) in around 223 BC, it was used by the famous Hannibal for his Iberian capital.

Conquered by the Romans in 209 BC Cartagena was re-named Carthago-Nova (New Carthage). Much of its Roman history has long since disappeared, but there is still evidence of the Roman Road and of a Roman ampitheatre from the time of Augusto.

Also worth visiting are the Byzantine ramparts, the Literna (ancient lighthouse) and the Cathedral of Santa Maria.

Cartagena has been and continues to be a major port and naval base, with its deepwater harbour and its important strategic position. The coastline around Cartagena is excellent for scuba diving and snorkeling.

Cartagena lies on the coast of the Murcia region accessed by the N332, AP-7 motorway and the A30 from Murcia.
